Day 1 - Arrive to the beautiful Durango area-Casual Evening

Tucked away in a horseshoe of the incredible San Juan Mountains in the southwestern corner of the state, Durango has been the gateway to southwestern Colorado's riches for more than 100 years.

Before you depart for Durango, make sure you have visited the Special Events Calendar to find out which of our many events you and your family wish to attend.

You should also confirm your accommodations reservations prior to departing, particularly if you are visiting us during June, July and August. Check our accommodation section of www.durango.org for details on the diverse lodging facilities we offer.

You should also take a moment to visit our Visitor Center located at 111 S. Camino del Rio in Durango, where we will provide you the latest and most complete information about the many things to do during your visit.

Arrive early in the afternoon and spend a casual and relaxing evening enjoying the small mountain town atmosphere by taking a walk in Downtown Durango. You will find an abundance of one-of-a-kind stores and boutiques located between fantastic restaurants and specialty stores.

End your casual evening by visiting one of our fantastic brewers and lounges, such as The Diamond Belle Saloon, The Office Spiritorium, Carver Brewing, Christina's Grill & Bar, Francisco's Restaurant, Lady Falconburgh's, Olde Tymer's Café, and Steamworks Brewing Company. Many of them offer live entertainment so check the Durango Herald for more information.

Day 2 - Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Rail Road & Silverton

Board the 120 year-old steam engine train at 8:15 a.m. and travel the route that miners and visionaries carved out of the Rocky Mountains, high above the rushing Animas River. If you purchase the Bus/Train Combo, you will enjoy two different, but equally spectacular rides.

Enjoy a two-hour layover in Silverton. The San Juan Historical Society sponsors walking tours of Silverton's historic buildings, while the San Juan County Jail makes an interesting stop for history buffs. Don't forget to stop by the Silverton Freight Yard Museum! Admission is included with your ticket.

Spend the evening enjoying the ragtime piano player at the Diamond Belle located in the Strater Hotel in downtown Durango. The piano player will have you laughing and singing along to a variety of tunes and novelty songs.

Enjoy an elegant dinner in one of our steakhouses or seafood restaurants, such as Ken & Sue's Main Ave., Antlers Grille, Ariano's, Chez Grand-Mere, Cyprus Café, East by Southwest, Mahogany Grille, Ore House, Randy's, Red Snapper, Seasons Rotisserie-Grill, Sweeney's, or Hamilton Chop House.

Day 3 - All Things Historical

Start your day with a hearty breakfast in downtown Durango in one of our many favorite restaurants and bakeries such as Carvers, Christina's Grill, College Drive Café, Durango Bagel, Le Rendezvous Swiss Bakery, Oscar's Café, or Steaming Bean.

Visit the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Rail Road Museum (admission is included with your ticket) and then start your way to Mesa Verde National Park, where 14 Centuries of Mystery and Wonder awaits. Over 4,000 identified sites within Mesa Verde provide you with endless exploration and intrigue.

Or you could spend the day visiting our local museums where you will find exhibits on area history and Native American cultures. The Center for Southwest Studies, located at the Fort Lewis College, offers an outstanding collection of Southwestern artifacts and historical records. The Animas Museum presents the most complete history on our area.

End the historical afternoon with a walking tour of Main and Third Avenue. Pick up these historic walking tour guides at the Visitor Center.

Spend the evening enjoying the Vaudeville Revue and Melodrama at the Durango Arts Center or experience a western dinner and adventure at the Bar D Chuckwagon. Kids love it. Starting inMay of 2008 live entertainment will fill the Henry Strater Theater at the Historic Strater Hotel.

Day 4 - Adventure Day

The Durango area offers a wide range of water and horse related activities. Enjoy a morning horseback ride and then enjoy a Rafting/Jeep Tour. You will enjoy spectacular views and exciting experiences.

End your day with a relaxing and leisure evening at the Trimble Hot Springs and Spa, enjoying the therapy pools, Olympic size swimming pool and full service spa.
